Happily Ever After
I’d like to start this blog on an optimistic note. We have struggled for years with our diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder (DID), but I think that we are now at a place of safety, stability and healing and in the happily ever after part of our story. A part that doesn’t get talked about often when discussing dissociation or trauma. There are days that are hard of course, but overall, we are happily married with two beautiful kids, and with a stable job that allows us to pursue our own passions.
I first learned that we were a system in November of 2021, during one of the worst periods of mental health crises that we’ve had during a conversation with a friend about Moon Knight. Prior to this conversation, I wasn’t really aware of DID outside of shitty representation in movies, but too much of what I learned about DID fit. We spoke about it with therapists who helped us to explore internal communication and working to bring down internal barriers.
At our highest, we’ve had 29 active alters, and presently, it feels like it’s just me. I don’t know if this is going to stick as a sort of final fusion (we’ll talk more in depth about our thoughts there in another post), as it can be hard to tell in the moment exactly what is happening.
I wanted to start this blog to just share our thoughts and experiences as a system in hopes that it also provides comfort and a space for other systems to know that they aren’t alone.
