I’d like to apologize if you aren’t from a magical dimension, and are expecting an explanation of how magic works. This section is instead for people from magical dimensions as a guide for travelling as a magical person. I’ll leave the explanations to theoretical magicians to write books about, and if you’re really interested, then you may want to travel to the Wandering Library to research magic further.
First, you need to think about where your magic comes from when travelling through dimensions. If your magic is inherent to yourself, then your magic should work fine wherever you travel through the multiverse. However, if your magic comes from the world around you, then it gets trickier.
For example, I was needing to find somewhere to lay low after quickly leaving from the Endless Empire, and I took the first ship that I could, which happened to be traveling to the Crescent Galaxy. (In case you weren’t aware, there is no magic inherent to the Crescent Galaxy, which means they have had to use science to do all the things that we can do with arcana [I know, it’s dreadfully boring]).
I found myself dropped off at Port Crysalli with a handful of notes in my pocket, and only a short amount of time before I was found, so I did what any reasonable person would, and went on the search for a Noodle Shop. If your pursuer is going to catch you, you should at least have a full stomach when they do so.
I know that this isn’t a section on the Crescent Galaxy or Port Crysalli, but if you ever find your way to this part of the verse, it would definitely be worth your time to stop at the Star Lotus Noodle Company. Their Ancestor Soup is an experience that can’t be missed. They say that the soup has been going for over 100 years, and the complexity that it brings the flavors cannot be described in any way that would truly do it justice. It is a unique flavor every time so it’s worth a return trip, but if you’ve already tried it, then you don’t need me to tell you that. If you do stop by, tell Tarn that I said hello, and maybe they’ll give you a little discount (this is not a guarantee [I’m sure they won’t appreciate me putting this in print {but try your chances anyway right?}]).
Now, I should tell you that there is one important upside for fleeing from a magical universe to a non-magical one, and even though you don’t have the magic that you normally rely on, neither does anyone else. There is one caveat to this though, and that is when you’re on the run, it is definitely worth the time to plan out your escape route, since sometimes you can forget that you are also wanted in your destination and suddenly find that while you are enjoying the most spectacular bowl of soup, that you are suddenly surrounded by the enforcers of a certain mob boss who didn’t appreciate when you ran away with their prized star skipper. You’ll be in a particularly bad pickle, if you also can’t let them know what happened to the star skipper or where it currently is. Definitely worth the time to actually plan through where you will be running and to keep a tally of where it is best to avoid showing your face.
If, however, you have an unreliable memory and a knack for forgetting to plan through the entirety of a heist, you can always instead plan to keep a handful of smoke bombs on your person, and be an exceptional tipper so that when you are surrounded by a handful of booted thugs who are angry about an allegedly missing star skipper, you can obfuscate your surroundings and rely on your good friend to show you the escape tunnel that definitely doesn’t exist in case the authorities decide to raid the establishment, and find yourself in a safe house where you can plan your next move in order to avoid the people who may be chasing you from the Endless Empire and the Crescent Galaxy.
Now, obviously, I don’t condone doing anything illegal, but I will note that it is difficult to stay on the right side of the law when you are travelling through an unlimited number of universes which each have their own sets of laws based on their own cultures, morals, and attempts to control their populace. I wouldn’t dare to criticize the United Council’s decisions, but allowing for each universe to continue in any way that they please definitely makes it harder for their Keepers to do anything about crime between dimensions, and definitely makes the process more complicated. Perhaps, this is by design. This confusion of legal processes can also be to your benefit if you a) use the local law enforcement to explain to enforcers from another dimension that they don’t have jurisdiction in this universe, and 2) create a rumor that you sold the artifact that the enforcer is chasing you for to the mob who believes that you stole their prized star skipper. If you are able to lay low long enough, the resulting confusion means that you could sneak into the mob base, steal a less prized star skipper, and leave evidence to make it look like the elephantim from the Endless Empire was the one who stole it, and thus leaving your reputation clean.
Update: Sometimes, even after putting together a particularly flawless plan, there can be obstacles that you could not foresee, and in those moments, your greatest tool is improvisation. For instance, sometimes the rumors that you meant to spread don’t stick, and sometimes, the local law enforcement are in the pocket of Don Greo so after you steal a star skipper and fly to Carindam, you find that they tracked your location, and instead you are greeted by Don Greo, and Imperial Captain Unishad who have come to an agreement of exactly who gets to do what to you.
I cannot promise this will work for you, but you may try:
Step 1: Drop one of your smoke bombs for dramatic effect.
Step 2: Say “Friends, it’s so funny running into you here. I hear that you’re both quite mad at me, but I can easily rectify the situation. Here, here’s the Turtle of Eternal Fortune that seems to have made it’s way into my bag without my knowing.”
Step 3: Throw a bag toward Don Greo.
Step 4: Drop a thermo mine at the entrance of the ship, and head toward the back door.
Step 5: Sneak into the Don’s ship while they are arguing over the bag, and have triggered the mine.
Step 6: Non-lethally incapacitate the pilot and guards with the stun gun that you keep in your bag.
Step 7: Use the weapons system to destroy the flight capability of each other ship in the dock.
Step 8: Fly to another port and take the first flight back to a magical dimension.
Step 9: Profit.
I can’t guarantee that this will work every time, but it is always good to have back up plans, and a hefty bag full of explosives, distractions and various devices for when your magical bag of tricks aren’t there.
